Strengthening Workplace Safety Through Fire Emergency Preparedness at Petrocon
Safety is not measured only by the procedures written on paper. It is measured by how prepared people are when those procedures need to be put into action. Petrocon recently conducted a full building fire emergency evacuation drill at our facility to strengthen emergency readiness, response coordination, and practical safety awareness across the workplace.
As an Engineering Design Company providing Detailed Engineering Services, Engineering Consultancy Services, Oil and Gas Engineering Services, and BIM Engineering Services, we understand that effective project delivery depends not only on technical capability, but also on creating a safe and prepared working environment for our people.
A Structured Approach to Emergency Evacuation
To ensure an organised response, the building was divided into six divisions, each managed by designated floor leaders responsible for guiding occupants during the evacuation. The exercise was coordinated by a 28-member Emergency Response Team (ERT), comprising:
- 1) Incident Controller
- 2) Emergency Response Coordinator
- 3) Firefighters
- 4) First Aiders
- 5) Floor Leaders
Working together, the team successfully guided all 550 occupants to the designated assembly point.
Key Result: Evacuation Completed in 8 Minutes
The full evacuation was completed in 8 minutes, providing a practical assessment of emergency response coordination and helping teams understand how responsibilities work together during a real evacuation scenario. Drills such as these help identify how effectively communication, movement, leadership, and emergency procedures function under time-sensitive conditions.
Practical Fire Extinguisher Training
Emergency preparedness also depends on knowing how to respond appropriately to different types of fire. As part of the session, employees received hands-on training in the correct use of fire extinguishers based on fire type. The training covered:
- 1) CO₂ extinguishers
- 2) Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) extinguishers
Employees beyond the designated ERT also participated in the training, helping extend practical fire safety awareness across the wider workforce.
Reinforcing Emergency Response with a Fire Hydrant Drill
A fire hydrant drill was also conducted to give participants practical exposure to emergency firefighting procedures and equipment. This helped reinforce the importance of coordination between different response roles and gave employees a clearer understanding of how emergency systems are used during a real incident.
Safety as Part of Engineering Culture
In engineering environments, safety must be integrated into the way people think, plan, communicate, and execute work. Whether teams are involved in Detailed Engineering Services, complex Oil and Gas Engineering Services, multidisciplinary Engineering Consultancy Services, or digital coordination through BIM Engineering Services, preparedness and disciplined execution remain essential.
The same principles that support successful engineering projects — clear responsibilities, coordinated teams, accurate communication, and readiness for unexpected situations — are equally important in workplace safety.
Turning Procedures into Real-World Readiness
Emergency plans become truly effective when people understand their roles and have the confidence to act. Regular drills help transform written procedures into practical capability by giving employees the opportunity to experience evacuation processes, use safety equipment, and understand how emergency response teams operate.
For Petrocon, workplace safety is an ongoing responsibility. By continuing to strengthen awareness, preparedness, and practical response capability, we aim to create an environment where our people are better equipped to respond when it matters most. Because safety is not only about having a plan. It is about being ready to execute it.
